This cheap upgrade made my old TV feel new again

There are a lot of gimmicks in the home theater space. Most of them end up falling by the wayside sooner or later, such as curved and 3D TVs, or more recently, 8K TVs. Some are persistent — you can still find gold-plated HDMI cables on the market, despite the fact that they do absolutely nothing to improve a digital signal.
