Google Nexus 5 review

Remember when I said I couldn't put Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 down? Well, I put it down. After months of rumors, leaks and speculation, Google finally took the wraps off of its new Nexus 5 smartphone last week and Android fans were elated. The sleek new handset started selling out in mere minutes and by the end of the day, it would be weeks until new orders of some Nexus 5 builds would be dispatched. Can Google's new Nexus phone possibly live up to all the hype that has built up over the past few months?

The Nexus 5 is the first pure Google smartphone I have ever been interested enough in to actually purchase. I have used review units of every Nexus model in the past for at least a short period of time, but until now I had never bothered to purchase one for myself.
Frankly, Nexus devices never really did anything for me. Stock Android is nice and Nexus devices have always been well made, but they have never been in the same league as flagship smartphones from the likes of HTC, Samsung and others. A Galaxy Nexus over a Galaxy S III? No way. A Nexus 4 over an Optimus G, a Galaxy S4 or an HTC One? Not a chance.

I also like the software enhancements offered by Google's various partners. The HTC TV app on the One coupled with the phone's infrared blaster is outstanding, for example. Another example is Samsung's S Pen and related software suite. Companies devote tremendous resources to enhancing Android. Sometimes they swing and miss, but sometimes it really pays off.

MTNL, BSNL may offer free roaming from January 26

State-owned telecom firms MTNL and BSNL are likely to launch new roaming plans from January 26 that will offer their subscribers free calls, sources said. "MTNL has plans to make roaming free for its customers on its network in Delhi and Mumbai without any additional charge," said an official source. He added, however, that BSNL will also have a roaming plan for free calls, but its customers may have to shell out Re 1 a day to avail of the facility.

The schemes are likely to be in place from January 26. Several private telecom operators already offer plans under which, for a monthly or daily fee starting Rs 5, people get all incoming calls without roaming charges. MTNL has operations in Delhi and Mumbai only, while BSNL has operations across country except in these two circles.

Apple fan explains what it's like to use Android for six months

We see plenty of iPhone users switch to Android for a period of time and then write about their experiences. For example, we recently read an account from an Apple fanboy who couldn't stand using the Nexus 5 even for a full 24 hours. We also see plenty of stories from Android enthusiasts who try to stomach the iPhone for a period of time. These stories are often written from the perspective of fanboys on both sides, however, so they rarely offer much substance. One iPhone user took to Reddit on Thursday to describe his experience using Android for six months though, and he provided an uncommonly succinct and level-headed account of his impressions after moving back to his iPhone 5.

Google Glass now supports prescription frames and lenses

In December last year, we saw the first photos of the Google Glass with prescription frames surface online. Today, Google has made things official by announcing that these prescription Google Glasses (Explorer Edition) will be available on the Google Glass Web Store this week.

Prescription glasses are a feature that has been widely requested in Google's Explorer program, and Google will be finally offering it in partnership with VSP, which is an US-based Health insurance provider. One will be able to choose from four different titanium-made prescription frames - Bold, Curve, Thin and Split - priced at $225 or two new shades of sunglasses - Active and Edge - which are priced at $150 each. Counting the already available colors on the Google Glass and these new add-ons, one will be able to choose from around 40 combinations.

Air India to offer Wi-Fi service to passengers on board

Air India might soon start offering a paid inflight Wi-Fi service for its passengers, Times of India reports. If done so, Air India will become the first Indian airline to allow passengers to access the Internet through Wi-Fi.

Reportedly, the service will be available across its flights including the international as well as domestic flights. However, it will not come for free and Air India will charge fee for accessing the service, which would also help generate some revenues for the company.

The iPhone 6 may have a different kind of wireless charging

more
Apple has been recently rumored to run a trial production of iPhone models that have sapphire glass displays, but there may be another reason the company is interested in such panels for future devices, aside from increasing the durability of the screen. At a time when the competition is offering wireless charging batteries and developing new means to make the technology more user-friendly, Apple may be working on a totally different kind of wireless battery charging for the next iPhones.

One analyst from Seeking Alpha believes he has found evidence that sapphire glass will actually include tiny solar panels that would help you charge iPhone batteries by simply using the power of the sun. Matt Margolis says the iPhone 6 and the 2014 iPod touch (if there will be one) may come with a display capable of increasing battery life.
