Google Tone’ lets you share URLs via sound

Google has launched a plug-in for its Chrome browser called Google Tone that lets you share links with people within earshot by simply opening a Chrome tab, and then sending out an audio signal.

It’s a new Chrome extension, that Google claims was born on a fun evening, but then later proved to be extremely useful in everyday business meetings.

The Google Tone button sits right next to the URL bar on Chrome, and on clicking the button, the plug-in emits a tone to share the link with those nearby who have Google Tone installed.

Once you send it, the receiver gets an audio notification that displays the link and the person’s name (with his Google profile picture) on their Chrome browser. You can then simply open the shared link by clicking on it, and it will open up in a new tab on your Chrome browser.

There is no mobile version for Google Tone, and it currently only works on the desktop browser. It is imperative to have logged into your Google account, for Google Tone to work. The company on its research blog says that although the extension currently only sends URLs, it is working on a version that could transfer any kind of files.

While there are many other ways to share links with people, like Google Hangouts or Gmail, Google Tone lets you share it in one click without leaving the webpage at all.
