WhatsApp reportedly working on a web client called “WhatsApp Web”
WhatsApp is working on a web version for its instant messaging client, it seems. While the company is yet to make it official, folks at AndroidWorld have spotted a mention of the client in the recent most WhatsApp update. Bolstering that theory is a recent interview of Pavel Durov, co-founder of rival messaging app Telegram, where he revealed that WhatsApp could be working on a web version “since they tried to hire our web dev”. The folks at the publication found laying within the code of the WhatsApp update v2.11.471 numerous mentions of “WhatsApp Web”, as well as information such as logging in and out of computers and latest activity in the web session. Interestingly, the codes don’t mention Facebook anywhere, thus it seems likely that the company doesn’t want people to login through their Facebook accounts, but instead use their phone number for any pairing and verification.
While it still isn’t a concrete proof that there will be a web client for WhatsApp, it does hint that the company is exploring such functionalities. WhatsApp has more than 600 million users, and several of its rivals including Viber, Telegram, WeChat, and Line maintain web and PC clients for their respective services. People have been craving for WhatsApp’s desktop or web client for years. In fact, this is one of the reasons why AirDroid and several other applications that offer workaround (mostly mirroring) to get WhatsApp messages on desktop are so popular.
