iOS 9 keyboard’s transliteration feature makes it easier than ever to type in Hindi

Last night in addition to launching the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad Pro, iPad mini 4, and the Apple TV, Apple also announced that it will be releasing iOS 9 on September 16. While the company has already revealed many of new OS’ features at WWDC, there is one feature that it didn’t highlight that has us excited.

While the keyboard on iOS already supported a few Indian languages, iOS 9 extends support for more languages including Punjabi, Gujarati and Telugu. It has also added some of the popular Hinglish words in its dictionary, and most important of all, added support for Hindi via transliteration.

What this means is, instead of typing on a Hindi keyboard, you can simply type on an English keyboard, and the words on screen will be automatically be transliterated to Hindi. The video posted by Preshit Deorukhkar shows just how easy it is to type in Hindi, courtesy of this feature.

Other improvements to iOS 9 keyboard include shortcuts to cut copy paste, and add attachments, and the ability to turn the keyboard into a trackpad to move around the cursor by putting two fingers on the keypad.
