We reported on Google’s plans to launch the its Google Play gift card service in India just a few hours ago, and now the tech giant has made the official announcement. The company is calling it prepaid vouchers for the Indian market, and have confirmed that they will be made available at Vijay Sales and Spice Hotspot retail outlets in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Jaipur over the coming weeks.

The prepaid vouchers will be available in three denominations of Rs 500, Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500. Explaining the purchase process, Google explains in its blog, “Simply ask the cashier at the register for a Google Play prepaid voucher. Pay using cash or any other form of payment accepted by the retail store and receive a redemption code that you can use to purchase digital content on Google Play.”

These vouchers are easy to use and eliminate the need for credit cards for every purchase on the Play Store. The introduction of prepaid vouchers would enable users to buy paid content from the Play Store without having to use their credit or debit cards, which was proving to be a major challenge for Google

One of the ways to tackle the plastic challenge was for Google to tie up with carriers for integrating purchases from the Play Store with the user’s monthly bill or prepaid account but that didn’t take off either in India.

Now, with these prepaid vouchers, all you need to do is launch the Google Play Store and swipe from the left of the screen. Tap on the newly introduced redeem option, enter the code of your Google prepaid voucher and start downloading any digital content from the Store. These prepaid vouchers never expire, unlike traditional prepaid vouchers.  You can use these vouchers to download apps, music, movies and even books from the Play Store

This prepaid voucher service was first launched in US in 2012, and is called Google Play gift cards there. In the subsequent years, it was then launched in 28 more countries and has finally arrived in India today. In the US, Google Play gift cards are available in $10, $15, $25 and $50 denominations.
