WhatsApp working on a feature to transcribe voice messages: Here’s what we know so far
WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps on the planet and it gives its users plethora of options to pick from to share a message with a friend, a family member or a colleague. Besides the usual text messages, the company also offers voice and video calls, voice messages, GIFs, stickers, and animated stickers for users to share their thoughts and opinions. Now, word is that the company is working on developing a new feature that will enable users to understand the communicated message more effectively.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned messaging app is working on a transcription feature that will let users to transcribe their voice messages. As of now, users can adjust the speed at which a voice note can play. Users can pick between 1x, 1.5x and 2x speeds to play the voice message in the app. While this gives users the ability to skim through a voice message quickly, it still leaves gaping holes in the ease of communication, especially if the sender of the message speaks too fast or if the receiver is caught in a situation where they cannot listen to the voice message. And so, the voice message transcription feature can come in handy, for situations like these and more, where voice messages are less than ideal.
A screenshot of the feature in development shows that the company is developing an introduction screen to explain when the transcription is not available. The available options include when the app doesn’t recognise the spoken words or when the voice note is sent in a language that is different from the one that the receiver has set in the app.
Furthermore, the blog site also talks about the privacy aspect of the feature. The blog site says that these transcriptions will always be performed locally on the device by downloading relevant language packs. This means that WhatsApp will not be snooping in on your conversations or sharing the content with Apple. This means that when the feature is available, users will be able to read the transcribed voice messages without worrying about anyone listening or reading users’ chats. That said, it is possible that only the feature will support only the more recent versions of iOS.
As far as availability is concerned, the report says that WhatsApp is developing this feature for its iOS app at the moment and there is no word on when the feature will be rolled out in the main app or be available to the Android users.
