Samsung recently unveiled the Galaxy S23 series smartphones at a global launch event in San Francisco. Simultaneously, the company launched its newest flagship devices in India. On the sidelines of one of the company’s biggest launches of the year, we sat down for a conversation with Samsung India’s Senior Director of Mobile Business, Aditya Babbar, to understand Samsung’s vision for its Galaxy S-series devices, how it is making them more accessible even in tier 2 and tier 3 cities across the country and what sort of response has the series received so far.

During our conversation, the Samsung India executive said that the company has focused on three major aspects as far as bringing improvements to the Galaxy S23 series is concerned. These aspects are – camera, performance and gaming, and sustainability. Talking about the camera, Babbar said this year Samsung has not only included a 200MP in its ‘Ultra’ smartphone, but it has also made the sensors and the entire camera setup intelligent enough such that it is able to capture the best possible image even under hard-to-capture conditions.

“The way that we have built the device is – When I talk about the rear camera with 200-megapixel adaptive pixel technology. It is a giant leap for a consumer…The camera is intelligent enough to decide whether I should shoot in 12MP, 50MP or 200MP. Now that is a big improvement as a consumer because I don’t know that this shoot will not come good in this kind of lighting. Two, what is changing at the OIS is that…you’re able to get much wider shots. Third, the way we have built the AI is very different…A lot of times, you would have clicked a picture and you would have realised that why is this light travelling. All those things have taken a giant leap and improvement,” he said.

“Where it is changing and changing a very different orbit of technology is the front camera. With the dual-PD technology, which was mostly seen in the rear camera, now coming in the front camera, we will have 60 percent brighter selfies…Third…with the Dynamic HDR coming in the front camera, again it’s a very, very big technology shift,” he added.

Talking about gaming, the Samsung India executive said that this year Samsung has introduced adaptive power technology in the series, which intelligently detects the kind of usage and optimises the battery and the overall performance accordingly.

“What we understand is power management is extremely important when the gaming comes into the game. What we have done with power management is that first we have done adaptive power technology…with a 2.7x bigger vapour chamber, it is going to be extremely cool even in the long gaming session. Even the screen, it is the brightest display in a Galaxy. But we have brought adaptive vision booster,” he said.

“Lastly on the tech side, the battery sees a 22 percent improvement. We have also done, in a collaboration with Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, the streaming efficiency, because it’s a custom chipset [Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2], that’s where it sees an extremely efficient power management, so it gives you a much better battery performance,” Babbar added.

During our conversation, the Samsung India executive also said that around 1,40,000 customers booked the Galaxy S23 series devices in the first 24 hours of the pre-booking window. In total, these devices are valued at Rs 14,000 crores.

“We have seen a record pre-booking in the first 24 hours. It is 1,40,000 consumers who have pre-booked the device and it translates into the value of Rs 14,000 crore and an ASP of Rs 1 lakh. So that’s been the success which we have seen in the first 24 hours of the device and it is still counting,” Babbar said in a statement.

Galaxy S23 series affordability and accessibility

Samsung India’s Senior Director of Mobile Business also touched upon the subject of how the company is making it easier for people in the smaller towns and cities to buy the more premium Galaxy S23 series devices. The idea, as the Samsung India executive explained, is to provide easy and long credits in monthly EMIs, which makes these devices both affordable and accessible.

For the unversed, the Galaxy S23 starts at Rs 74,999, while the Galaxy S23 Plus starts at Rs 94,999. The Galaxy S23 Ultra, on the other hand, starts at Rs 1,24,999 and goes all the way to Rs 15,4999.

“It’s a generation leap, that’s where we wanted to make tech accessible and affordable to everyone. So what we have done is, we have introduced a 24-months EMI where the consumer can own the new Galaxy at Rs 5,200. The interest is borne by us,” Babbar said.

“Two, we are bringing for all the new-to-credit customers in the tier 2 and tier 3 towns who have never taken credit, 15-months EMI.”

“Three…we have announced a Rs 8,000 worth bonus there. For all the pre-booking customers we have benefits worth Rs 50,000. So, we have bundled Galaxy Watch 4 Classic LTE, which is around Rs 42,000 – Rs 43,000, and around Rs 7,000 other benefits. He just needs to pay Rs 4,999 and he gets a value pack worth Rs 50,000 over the counter,” he added.
