Netflix explains how it will prevent users from sharing their account passwords

Netflix has long sought to prevent users from sharing their account passwords. Last year, the company announced two new features that would help the company curb the practice of password sharing. First, the company introduced a ‘Profile Transfer’ feature that would let people outside a household to spin off their profiles into a fresh Netflix account while preserving all of their data. In addition to this, the company announced ‘Paid Sharing’ functionality, wherein the primary account holder can pay some extra amount per user per month in order to let people outside a household to keep accessing their profiles. Now, the company has shared a detailed plan as to how it aims to prevent users from sharing their Netflix account passwords.

The company, in a support page, wrote that it will ask users to verify devices outside their household if it detects that they sign into an account or use an account frequently. “When a device outside of your household signs into an account or is used persistently, we may ask you to verify that device before it can be used to watch Netflix or switch your Netflix household. We do this to confirm that the device using the account is authorized to do so,” the company wrote.

In the support page, Netflix said that it will verify a device by sending a link to the email address or phone number associated with the primary account owner. The link opens a page with a four-digit verification code that users need to enter on the device that requested it within 15 minutes. They will be able to watch Netflix only when they enter the four-digit verification code within the prescribed time. Furthermore, the company said that ‘device verification may be required periodically’ without specifying the exact time period.

Talking about the need for account verification, Netflix said that “as long as the device being used to watch Netflix is using the internet connection in the primary account owner’s household, it will not require verification.”

And if you are wondering how Netflix will detect if a user is in the same household as the primary account holder, the company said that it will use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity from devices signed into the Netflix account for the same.
