Google Maps’ Android app will soon let you plan your trips based on charging stops for EVs
Electric Vehicles or EVs are gaining popularity in countries across the globe. However, one fundamental problem that a lot of EV users face is that of finding a charging station while they are on a long trip. Now, a new report says that Google is working on a feature for a feature for Google Maps’ Android app that will enable users plan their trips with their EVs more efficiently.
9To5 Google, while digging through the code of Google Maps version 11.65, found messages which suggest that Google is working on a functionality that will enable users to plan their trips based on the availability of EV charging stations.
Some of the messages are: ‘By the time you get there, your battery will be low’, ‘Charging stop needed to reach destination’, ‘Trip too long to auto-add charging stops. Add stops after you start’, ‘No internet. Can’t load charging stops’ and ‘There aren’t enough compatible charging stations to get to your destination’. At first these messages seem random. However, on taking a closer look, it is easy to see that these are messages that the Google Maps’ app will show under various situations.
It is worth noting that Google first introduced this functionality in Google Maps on Android Automotive back in 2021. “…when you enter a destination that requires two or more recharge stops, algorithms in Maps will search and filter through tens to thousands of public charging stations to find the most efficient route — all in less than 10 seconds. You can see how long each charge will take and your updated total trip time, so your final ETA will never again be a mystery,” the company had explained in a blog post at the time.
“For shorter trips where only one charge is needed… you can select a charging station that best fits your needs from a list of recharge points in Google Maps,” the company had added at the time.
However, this feature was available with select EVs in select countries at a time when EVs were just beginning to gain a foothold in the market.
Two years later, EVs have become more mainstream and so it makes sense for Google to bring the same feature to its mobile app.
That said, the feature is far from complete at the moment. But we will keep an eye out for details.
