Google Chrome users need to download the latest version of the web browser on their personal computers as soon as possible as the company has released an update that fixes a critical zero-day vulnerability that has been exploited by hackers. Google in a blog post said that it is aware of the fact that this vulnerability has been exploited in the wild and that it has released version 105.0.5195.102 of Chrome web browser on Windows, Mac and Linux to fix the mentioned bug.
While Google has released Chrome update to all affected devices, it has kept details about the vulnerability under wraps in order to prevent the vulnerability from getting abused further. What we know about the vulnerability is that it pertains to “Insufficient data validation in Mojo”, which is set of runtime libraries used by Chromium, the search engine that Chrome and even Microsoft Edge are based on. Beyond this, the company has not revealed anything about the vulnerability.
Google, in a blog post on Chrome’s security page, said that, “Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix.”
“We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed,” the company added in its blog post.
It is worth noting that this zero-day bug was revealed by an anonymous tipster on August 30, 2022, following which the company released an update to fix the bug on September 2, 2022. Google says that it expects the update to roll out to all users in the coming days and weeks.
Interestingly, the update comes just days after the company released Chrome 105 on Windows, Mac and Linux that fixes a total of 24 vulnerabilities ranging between low and critical. Now, the company has released an update with that fixes a single vulnerability.
