Gmail for Android updated with Material Design UI and support for other email services
Google is slowly rolling out the Material Design language to all of its apps. Earlier this week it updated its Drive app, now the latest one to join the party is Gmail. In addition to the redesigned interface, the Gmail app now, as expected, supports IMAP/POP or Exchange emails.
The addition of support for IMAP/POP or Exchange essentially enables you to add any non-Google email account – from providers like Yahoo, iCloud Mail, Outlook and others – to the Gmail app. It’s a welcome change, as the stock email client in Android didn’t have much features and it wasn’t even pleasant to look at.
Among other big changes, the app now embraces the Material Design interface which Google introduced with the Android 5.0 Lollipop. One of the biggest noticeable changes you would see is the absence of grey paint that was prevalent in the previous versions. Also, the app shows bolded and unbolded texts in emails preview, which helps to determine if the email has been read. Much like the Inbox app, there is also a circular button for composing a new email, that’s pretty handy too.
Among other changes, Gmail has also given a facelift to the navigation bar, making it easier to switch between different email accounts. The top display shows the cover photo from the Google+ account, again this feature is pretty similar to the Inbox app the company released last month.
The new update has begun rolling out and it may take a while before it reaches your phone
