Google at its annual I/O 2015 event in San Francisco has announced an important update for Google Maps. After YouTube, Google is bringing offline mode to Maps and will roll it out later this year. While there was already a hack to get offline Maps but the new update will bring turn-by-turn directions with voice prompts.

This means you’ll be able to use the navigation app even when you don’t have an internet connection. It lets you search for different places, will give you turn-by-turn directions, and see reviews and open hours of venues. Google Maps for offline mode also auto completes in search.

Showing it off in the demo, the offline functionality worked seamlessly on airplane mode.  As mentioned above, it will be rolled out later this year, with no clarity over the timeline or it being region specific.
