Currently, Google’s Android Wear platform for wearables needs an accompanying Android smartphone to function. Things are however set to change as a French Technology website 01net reports that the search giant is working on making the platform compatible with iOS. This new feature is expected to be announced at Google’s annual developer conference in May.The Apple watch, when released next month, will need an iPhone to work and it is very unlikely that the Cupertino folks will come up with compatibility for non-iOS devices. This can be an opportunity for Android to snatch a chunk of iOS accessory ecosystem.

When Jeff Chang, the Android Wear senior product manager, was asked about implementing the cross-platform compatibility he told Huffington Post how the technical constraints are throttling the process. We had seen a few days ago how Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh created an application that let Android Wear interact with the Apple Notification Center Service (ANCS). It facilitated message notifications to be shown on the Android wear.

On the contrary, we have witnessed manufacturers and consumers shying away from Android Wear, because of the fact that it swiftly squeezes out the energy from the rather tiny smartwatch batteries. Other concerns included the number of bugs that stop the platform from functioning to its full potential.

It will be interesting to see how Google integrates Android Wear’s functionality with iOS, and how (if that is) it will affect the forthcoming Apple Watch.
