Apple to open future iOS beta updates to all, no longer restricted to developers
In an effort to track down and squash bugs more effectively, Apple could soon begin releasing beta builds of its iOS mobile operating system to public. The Cupertino-based company has plans to begin this with iOS 8.3, a build which has already been seeded out to developers and follow the trend with the iOS 9 update, 9to5Mac reports.
Apple began allowing public users to beta test its product last year with a public beta program for OS X 10.9.3. It was followed by a large public beta program for OS X Yosemite. At the time, the company had allowed the first million users to participate in the beta testing program, however, for its forthcoming iOS updates, the company has plans to keep the number capped to only first 100,000 users to “maintain a higher level of exclusively,” the report adds. The iOS beta currently requires users to pay $99 for a one-year subscription.
The report further sheds light on the new features the company has planned for the iOS 9 update, expected to be unveiled at the WWDC event in June. According to Mark Gurman, the iOS 9 update will primarily focus on bringing speed and stability improvements. As for the iOS 8.3, the update brings support for Wireless CarPlay, enhanced voice Siri, improved login for google Services, and an upgraded Emoji keyboard.
The company’s move to allow more users to beta test its product is a good thing for consumers, as this will help it find more bugs and speed up the improvements process.
