After months of denying any plans of launching a version for PCs, WhatsApp today announced a web client that will enable users to use the world’s most popular mobile IM client on their PC and Macs. Screenshots of the app were leaked yesterday.

The web client would mirror conversations and messages from the phone to the web client, which means messages would remain on the phone as well. However, there are a few caveats.

First, it won’t work for iPhone users because of limitations Apple places. Second, at the moment it only supports Google’s Chrome browser. We tried installing it on Internet Explorer but it asked us to install Chrome browser.
To get WhatsApp working on your PC or Mac, you would first have to go to https://web.whatsapp.com. That will open a QR code that you would need to scan from WhatsApp on your phone to pair the two instances.

This is not exactly the web app we were looking for but it is a start nevertheless. Here’s WhatsApp’s announcement:

Today, for the first time, millions of you will have the ability to use WhatsApp on your web browser. Our web client is simply an extension of your phone: the web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device — this means all of your messages still live on your phone.

To connect your web browser to your WhatsApp client, simply open https://web.whatsapp.com in your Google Chrome browser. You will see a QR code — scan the code inside of WhatsApp, and you’re ready to go. You have now paired WhatsApp on your phone with the WhatsApp web client. Your phone needs to stay connected to the internet for our web client to work, and please make sure to install the latest version of WhatsApp on your phone. Unfortunately for now, we will not be able to provide web client to our iOS users due to Apple platform limitations.

We really hope you find web client useful in your everyday lives.
