Google conducted a dedicated developers’ conference last night where it showcased the latest prototype of its modular smartphone out of the Project Ara initiative. Dubbing it Spiral 2, Google has also announced that the first commercial handset will be revealed in the second half of this year, and the first consumers to experience the revolutionary technology will be the people of Puerto Rico.

Google also let out some of the specs of the Spiral 2 smartphone. It has a 720p display with Marvell PXA1928 and Tegra K1 dual application processors. It has a 5-megapixel camera, microUSB port, battery slot and speaker slot. Connectivity wise, it includes 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Google has also released a video showing all the value-additions the modular smartphone brings. It gives you the option to switch camera components, amp up battery life, change displays in case of cracks and more. It also shows off a cool night vision camera which can be snapped in and out whenever required.

There are 11 working modules for the Project Ara smartphone currently. Google plans to have as many as thirty options available by the end of this year.
