CES 2015 Live: Withings launches Activité Pop, a beautiful $150 smartwatch
Withings, a company that is best known for its connected digital weighing scales, announced a new smartwatch called Activité Pop at CES 2015 in Las Vegas. The Activité Pop is a follow-up to the $450 Activité the French company had launched last month. With Activité Pop, it is offering nearly the same functions wrapped in an attractive and unisex casing for only $150.
The Activité’s 36-millimeter diameter face, strong and polished build quality was lauded by reviewers, however, the $450 price tag wasn’t something most people liked. Withings says it understood the demand, and while the body parts have been swapped with more affordable alternatives, the Activité Pop still performs all the functions as Activité. Unlike the Activité, the Activité Pop doesn’t have the Swiss watch branding.
The Activité Pop smartwatch also packs in several health-oriented features including the ability to track steps, and other activities like running or swimming, and checks sleep quality. It also has a special alarm mode that wakes you up with a soft vibrating alarm on wrist. There is a third dial in the lower right-hand corner of the face of the watch which shows the percentage of your goals that you’ve managed to achieve. Other than that, the Activité Pop (as well as Activité) is just a fitness tracking device.
“We want the real mass market,” says Withings Chief Executive Cédric Hutchings. “A lot of the things that have been accepted by early adopters are not acceptable by the mass market and ‘the rest of us.” The watch comes with a Health Mate app (available for iOS only, according to the company, though there are similar apps available on Android, and Windows Phone) to let users keep a tab on how much goal they have achieved, and other stats.
Available in three colors: Azure, Shark Gray, and Sand, the Activité Pop, which comes with PVD-coated metal, is water-resistant up to 30 meters. The company says that its battery will last up to eight months. The Activité Pop is available to purchase in the United States now from Best Buy.
