LG and Mercedes-Benz team up to make camera system for future self-driving cars
Self-driving cars have become a major focus of research and development in the industry of late. After Google unveiled the prototype of its first self-driving car, other companies too want a piece of it, and LG and Mercedes-Benz today announced a partnership to make an intelligent camera system for automated driving.
LG has announced that it is working with car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz for the “next-generation camera systems.” The Korean company says that as part of the deal, it will be providing the “core components” of the self-driving cars from Mercedes-Benz in the future.
LG will be utilizing its existing ADAS (Advanced Drive Assistance System) products which offer services including camera that alert when a vehicle changes lane, read signs, as well as keep a tab on driver’s health status. Bolstering that will be the German car maker’s 6D Vision technology which allows the car to adjust the speed based on what is ahead of them. LG will also be offering its home entertainment and mobile technology with automobile to foster infotainment features.
“Mercedes-Benz is the ideal partner for LG as both companies share a vision of how ADAS technologies can improve the wellbeing and lives of all consumers,” said Woo-jong Lee, president and CEO of the LG Vehicle Components Company. “As the automobile evolves from a mechanical to an electronic system, LG will be in the perfect position to contribute its experience to the exciting automotive industry.”
Autonomous cars are the future, and that is perhaps why so many tech giants are devoting time and resources into it. LG showed its interest in the autonomous cars earlier this year when it became the first Android device manufacturer to team up with Open Automotive Alliance and promised to play a major role in the future of the connected car.
At its developer conference, Google revealed Android Auto, an Android-based operating system to control and add several infotainment features to the car. Last month, the company opened the APIs of Android Auto to let developers make apps for it. A report from earlier this month claimed that the Android maker is working on a variant of the next iteration of Android specifically designed for cars that won’t require an Android smartphone to operate it. Earlier this week, the company also showed off a fully functional prototype of its first self-driving car.
