Chinese mobile company Xiaomi could soon start manufacturing phones in India. The company which recently brought its last year’s flagship Mi 3 and Redmi 1S in the country has hired legal advisers to understand the regulatory aspects of manufacturing in India, Xiaomi’s India head Manu Jain told Wall Street Journal.

Xiaomi is China’s most successful mobile maker. The company, which is known for making premium devices at cheap price sells more phones than Samsung and Apple in China. It recently started selling mobile handsets in India which was immediately met with overwhelming response as it managed to sell thousands of handsets in matter of seconds.

In a statement to Wall Street Journal, Jain revealed that the company is thinking about starting manufacturing phones in the country. “We always thought that our manufacturing would be based out of China,” Mr. Jain said. “But India is beginning to become so important for us that we started to think whether we should set up our own manufacturing.”

Xiaomi has already hired legal advisers in the country to understand the regulatory aspects regarding manufacturing in India.

India is one of the world’s biggest phone markets. And considering the great start Xiaomi has got in India, it is understandable that it wants to increase its footprints in the country. It is already working on increasing its service centers, and its recent hires, including ex-Googler Jai Mani‘s suggests company’s motives.
